Hedgewitch, green witch, and kitchen witch are often used interchangeably, because some people’s practices do overlap, including mine

These paths are not rigid systems; every witch is different. For example, I am a hedgewitch, but Green witchcraft is very much part of my practice.

In this blog post, I want to briefly look at each practice so you can see the differences between them.

Hedgewitchcraft: Working With the Liminal

A hedge witch works with the liminal. The hedge is a metaphor for where otherworlds meet and overlap. This practice is rooted in connection with otherworlds and the movement of awareness through liminal space, where the seen and unseen interact. Journeying to the otherworld is known as hedge-riding.

Green Witchcraft: The Living World

A green witch works with what is alive. The green is the language of growth, decay, and renewal. This practice is rooted in a relationship with the natural world. It is tied to plants, the earth and seasonal cycles, where understanding is built through observation and lived experience.

A green witch learns through interaction with living systems. Herbs, trees, soil, and wild spaces are not symbols but active parts of practice.

This path is grounded in attention, care, and consistency. It is about learning the patterns of nature and responding to them over time.

Kitchen Witchcraft: The Domestic Craft

A kitchen witch works with what is daily. The kitchen is the centre of lived practice. This path is rooted in food, routine, and care within the home. It is where intention meets necessity, and where ordinary tasks become steady points of focus.

A kitchen witch works through cooking, preparation, and the use of ingredients in practical ways. The practice is embedded in daily life rather than separate from it.

This is a grounded form of witchcraft built on repetition, presence, and attention to detail in everyday actions.

How These Paths Overlap

These paths often overlap, as I have found within my own practice. Many practitioners move between them depending on factors such as lifestyle and experience. I do not believe witchcraft can be put into a box. It is shaped by the individual. But I also believe it matters to understand the foundations of other practices, because knowledge gives your path depth, not limitation.

I highly recommend the Pagan Portals books. Take a look here
