Hedge Riding and the Other-worlds.

I wanted to briefly explain hedge riding and the otherworlds, or realms. As mentioned in my first post Hedgewitcraft and hedge riding, not all hedge witches follow the same practices, and I think it’s best you follow what suits you the most.

However, in general, most hedge witches follow this or similar concepts when it comes to hedge riding. The otherworlds are separated into three realms: upper, middle, and lower.

Before we look into the three realms, I want to explain a bit more about hedge riding.

Hedgeriding and how it can be done
Hedgeriding: journeying between different realms or dimensions

Hedgeriding, also known as hedge crossing or journeying, is a term used in various spiritual and magical practices. It refers to the act of travelling or journeying between different realms or dimensions, often with the intention of connecting with spirits, deities, or other entities.

Hedgeriding can be practiced in different ways, depending on the specific tradition or belief system. Some people use meditation, visualisation, or trance techniques to enter an altered state of consciousness; others may incorporate the use of herbs, rituals, or specific tools to aid in their journeying. Some master hedgeriding during the stage before sleep.

Again, find the right method for you. If you are interested in learning more about hedgeriding or how to practice it, I recommend researching specific traditions or seeking guidance from experienced practitioners or teachers in the field. It’s important to approach these practices with respect, caution, and a willingness to learn and grow. You are not going to master this overnight; I cannot express more the importance of research first.

How a hedgewitch enters different realms

Again, how a hedgewitch enters different realms is a personal preference; some may see themselves entering different tunnels or doors. Another popular method is entering different parts of the tree. I will use this method to explain the three realms.

Hedgeriding and the celtic tree of life method
The tree of life

In hedgeriding, the Tree of Life represents a symbolic framework that connects different realms or dimensions of existence. It is often associated with the concept of the World Tree, which is found in various mythologies and spiritual traditions around the world.

By journeying along the branches and roots of the Tree of Life, practitioners can access different levels of consciousness, communicate with spirits or deities, gain wisdom, and deepen their understanding of the universe and their place within it.

The Celtic Tree of Life is known as the Crann Bethadh. It is a sacred symbol that represents the interconnectedness of all living things and the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth.

The Crann Bethadh is often depicted as a large, ancient oak tree, which holds great significance in Celtic culture. The oak tree was considered a symbol of strength, wisdom, and longevity.

The Celtic Tree of Life is believed to connect different realms. Its branches reach towards the heavens, while its roots delve deep into the earth. This symbolises the connection between the spiritual and earthly realms.

In Norse mythology, the Tree of Life is known as Yggdrasil. Yggdrasil is a massive ash tree that is said to connect the nine realms of Norse cosmology. It is considered the centre of the cosmos and serves as a bridge between different realms.

The Three Realms
The upper realm

This is often referred to as the “Upper World” or the “Heavenly Realm.” It is believed to be a place of higher consciousness, divine wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment.

In these interpretations, individuals can access the Upper World by ascending the branches of the Tree of Life. This journey represents a spiritual ascent or transcendence, where one can connect with higher beings, receive guidance, and gain insight into the mysteries of the universe.

The Middle Realm

The middle realm, which is believed to represent the earthly realm, is very much like our own. This is often referred to as the “Middle World” or the “Physical Realm.”

In this realm, there are various spirits, entities, and energies that can be encountered. These spirits may have different intentions, motivations, and agendas. Some may be benevolent and helpful, while others may be mischievous or even malevolent.

It is important to exercise caution when encountering spirits or engaging in spiritual practices. Not all spirits may have our best interests at heart, and some may have hidden agendas or seek to deceive or manipulate.

You can visit here if you want to look into the past, the future, or work with your ancestors. However, I prefer other methods, which I will write about at a later date. The middle can be accessed from the middle of the tree.

The Lower Realm

The lower realm or the realm of nature’s spirits and elementals. Here, you can connect with your spiritual guides and animal guides. However, you may meet guides in the upper realm.

If you want to imagine what it is like, think of the earth, which is untouched by humans. This is generally believed to be the most safe realm. There is another aspect of the lower world and this is the underworld. This would be entered through the tree roots.

It is not recommended that you throw yourself into hedgeriding. You need to learn all you can. If you want to practice something, practice meditation first and master that.

I highly recommend the Pagan Portals books. Take a look here

For hedgeriding, I recommend Pagan Portals-Hedge Riding by  Harmonia Saille. But do read her first book, Pagan Portals Hedge Witchcraft. Both books are beautifully written and easy to follow.
