How to create a simple winter altar

As winter settles in, many of us feel a natural pull to create a space that reflects the season’s beauty and energy. A winter altar can serve as a peaceful sanctuary for reflection, intention-setting, and connection to nature. My altar is on top of my writing desk at the moment; I change its location from time to time.

Elements of Your Winter Altar
candles

Candles are a beautiful way to bring warmth and light into your winter altar. Choose dark green, red, or white candles to represent the season. I have dark candles that go into white. I like to add a gothic touch to my altar.

  • Dark Green: Symbolises growth and renewal.
  • Red: Represents passion and warmth.
  • White: Signifies purity and peace.

You don’t need special candles; use what you have. If you can get some new ones, try these spell candles. Here for taper candles.

Natural Decor

Incorporating natural elements not only enhances the aesthetic of your altar but also connects you to the earth’s seasonal changes. I have just used a faux one here, but here are some easy-to-find items:

  • Evergreen Boughs: Collect branches from pine, fir, or cedar trees. These boughs symbolise endurance and life during the cold months.
  • Pinecones: Gather pinecones from your yard or nearby parks. They add texture and a rustic charm.
  • Dried Fruits: Use slices of oranges, apples, or even cinnamon sticks for a fragrant touch. You can dry fruits in your oven at low temperatures or purchase them from stores.
Crystals

Crystals can amplify the energy of your altar and provide protection and grounding. I have gone for a crystal ball; you can find one here. Here are three affordable options:

  • Clear Quartz: Known as a master healer, it amplifies energy and intention.
  • Snowflake Obsidian: This stone provides protection and helps you see the hidden aspects of yourself.
  • Amethyst: A calming stone that promotes peace and spiritual growth.
