Samhain: The Witch’s New Year.

As the leaves turn golden and the air grows crisp, we approach Samhain. Celebrated on the 31st October, Samhain marks the Witch’s New Year and the beginning of the dark half of the year.

The Essence of Samhain

Samhain, pronounced’sow-in’, means ‘Summer’s End’. Many believe it is a time when the veil between our world and the spirit realm is at its thinnest, allowing for easier communication with our ancestors and the Otherworlds. Personally I believe you can communicate with the other side anytime.

This festival represents the third and final harvest, traditionally when crops were gathered for winter stores. Any unharvested crops were left as offerings to nature spirits.

Samhain is the final of four fire festivals in the Celtic wheel of the year; the other three are Imbolc, Beltane, and Lughnasadh. It marks the midpoint between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice, embodying the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

Honouring the Ancestors

Samhain is the perfect time to honour and remember our ancestors and loved ones who have passed on. Here are some meaningful ways to do so:

  1. Candlelight vigil: Light candles for each ancestor you wish to honour, speaking their names aloud as you do so.
  2. Share stories: Gather with family or friends to share memories and stories of those who have passed.
  3. Offerings: Leave out small offerings of food, drink, or flowers for your ancestors.
  4. Meditation: Spend time in quiet reflection, opening yourself to any messages or wisdom your ancestors might share.
  5. Family history: Use this time to delve into your family history, perhaps starting a genealogy project.
  6. Visit gravesites: If possible, visit and tend to the graves of your ancestors.
  7. Ancestral Story Circle: Gather friends or family and take turns sharing stories about your ancestors or departed loved ones.

Herbs for Samhain

Bay leaves, lavender, rosemary, cloves, cumin, marjoram, pumpkin seeds, sage, sandalwood, and dandelion leaves are all associated with Samhain rituals and magic.

Easy Rituals and Tips for Samhain

  1. Samhain Candle Ritual: Light a black candle at sunset on Samhain. As you do, speak the names of loved ones who have passed on.
  2. Autumn Leaf Divination: Collect fallen leaves of different colours. Write a question on each leaf using a marker. Cast the leaves into the air and observe how they fall.If your leaf falls quickly, things may come to fruition quickly. Falls slowly; it may take time. Falls erratically, there may be obstacles. This is just a guide; trust what your intuition tells you.
  3. Samhain Cleansing Bath: Add rosemary, sage, and lavender to your bath water. As you soak, visualise the old year washing away.
  4. Bonfire Meditation: If you can safely have a bonfire, sit before it and meditate on what you wish to release from the past year.
  5. Samhain Nature Altar: Create a small altar using natural items like acorns, pine cones, and autumn leaves.
  6. Ancestral Story Circle: Gather friends or family and take turns sharing stories about your ancestors or departed loved ones.
  7. Samhain Incense Blend: Create a special Samhain incense using dried herbs like mugwort, rosemary, and sage.
  8. Samhain Journal Reflection: Take time to write in your journal about the past year. Reflect on lessons learnt, accomplishments, and what you hope to achieve in the coming cycle.
  9. Apple Peel Divination: Peel an apple in one long strip. Toss the peel over your left shoulder. The shape it forms when it lands is said to reveal the initial of a future love or important person in your life.

Cauldron Magic for Samhain
  • Burn some of your favourite herbs in your Cauldron. Rosemary is excellent for remembering loved ones in spirit.
  • Build a mini bonfire in your Cauldron, but be careful and never leave it unattended.
  • Use your Cauldron for scrying. Fill it with water and add some black ink. Light some candles and clear your mind; take notes of any shapes or images you see.
Besom Ritual

Use your broom to clean and clear away old energy, creating space for the new. You can combine this with a home cleansing ritual for added potency.

As we enter the dark half of the year, Samhain invites us to embrace the mysteries of life, death, and rebirth. It’s a time to honour those who came before us, reflect on our own journey, and set intentions for the new year.

Remember, Samhain is a deeply personal time. Feel free to adapt these rituals to suit your own practice and beliefs. The most important aspect is the intention behind your actions and the connection you feel to the season and your ancestors.
